Description

This is mimosa, the second brightest star in the southern constellation of Crux.

I tried to center it in the frame so that it would be the highlight of the image with its bluish color (spectral type B) and its beautiful multicolored diffraction pattern caused by the optical tube spider.

Soon after noticing the splendor of Becrux our eyes turn to its surroundings where contrasting with the blue there is a very orange star, called DY cruxis, a carbon variable star.

Becrux has significant cultural importance for many countries in the global south, being represented on the flags of several countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Samoa and Papua New Guinea. In addition to these, it represents the former capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro on its flag.
