Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a galaxy group of 5 galaxies, called Hickson 74, located about 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Serpens at a declination of +21 degrees.

This is one of the few Hickson objects comprised entirely of elliptical galaxies.  The group of 5 has a magnitude of 12.

The largest and brightest galaxy, magnitude 13 Hickson 62a, is also known as NGC 5910.  It spans 0.8 arc-minutes, which corresponds to a Milky Way like diameter of 120,000 light years.

At the bottom right of the image is the most interesting galaxy in the FOV, the grand design spiral galaxy PGC 54664.  The galaxy has an interesting inner pseudo-ring and a fascinating long curved bar. It is a large galaxy at 150,000 light years in diameter and is located 0.6 billion light years away from us, a bit further away than the Hickson group.

At least 50 small galaxies are seen in the background.  Despite the fact that all of the Hickson 74 galaxies are elliptical, the background has many interesting spiral galaxies, a number of which are edge-on.
