Description

The Lagoon Nebula has been known for quite some time, having been discovered before 1654
by Hodierna. It is one of a few star-forming regions visible to the unaided eye at mid-northern
latitudes. It lies some 4,100 ly away, and is huge, measuring at 50 x 110 ly. This is an emission
nebula, with both H-α and H-β being prominent. It is host to a number of distinct structures
and star clusters, including NGC 6523, NGC 6530 (star clusters), and the Hourglass Nebula
around the hot O-type star near the centre.

In this image I have used a filter that passes H-α, H-β and O-III emission lines. This gives a
more colourful image at the expense of partly obscuring the complex structure of the nebula
cloud.
