Description

The Whale Galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy located at an approximate distance of 30 million light years in the constellation Canes Venatici. It has been nicknamed the Whale because of its elongated, slightly triangular shape that resembles the profile of the whale. The smaller galaxy on its "back" is often referred to as The Pup.

NGC 4656/57 is a highly warped barred spiral galaxy located in the constellation Canes Venatici and is sometimes informally called the Hockey Stick Galaxies or the Crowbar Galaxy. Its unusual shape is thought to be due to an interaction between NGC 4656, NGC 4631, and NGC 4627.

It is my first image in many months as I worked my way through several mount challenges. Several "firsts" include: my first image with the new Stellarvue SVX102T; my first time using a NB filter and attempting to combine both Ha and OIII into a OSC image. I am still working on the combination method, and certainly know that NB affect on galaxies can be limited, but this turned out pretty well IMHO!

Enjoy.
