Description

The Great Carina Nebula, (NGC 3372, Eta Carina Nebula) lies in the Carina-Sagittarius Arm of our
Milky Way Galaxy about 8,500ly away. It is one of the highlights of our southern skies, and comprises a
complex arrangement of bright and dark nebulosity. Also embedded within it are a number of open
clusters of bright, hot, young stars which include O-class and Wolf-Rayet stars (e.g. Trumpler 14,
Trumpler 16, WR 25). Various features of the main nebula have been identified and given common
names (e.g. the Homunculus Nebula, the Defaint Finger, the Keyhole Nebula, the Mystic Mountain).

Nicholas-Louis de Lacaille discovered this nebula in 1752. The eponymous star near its centre is the
hypergiant, η Carinae, with a mass 100-150x and a brightness 4,000,000x our Sun. It is amongst the
most luminous stars in our known galaxy.

I have used a H+O triband filter in an effort to display the nebulosity of this complex region in
greater detail.
