Description

The Omega nebula has lots of nicknames: Swan, Checkmark, Lobster, and Horseshoe. The name Omega is derived from John Herschel's drawing in 1833 where he had the following observation "the figure of this nebula is nearly that of a Greek capital Omega...." M17 is roughly 5500 light years from Earth. It is a HII region in the constellation Sagittarius, a famous star-forming region of the Milky Way.
