Description

NGC 1499 The California Nebula is an emission nebula located approximately 1000 ly from Earth in the Perseus constellation.

It is called the California Nebula due to the shape revealed by long exposure imaging, which resembles the shape of the state of California.

The Ha/Hb emission from this nebula are due to the high energy emissions from the nearby type O7 star, Xi Persei (Menkib).

This is my third attempt at imaging this nebula; taking a slightly different approach of more shorter exposure rather than long exposures.  Experts say this shouldn't make a difference in the integrated image, but I'm finding that it is mitigating the halo around very bright stars in the stacked image.  You can compare this image at just over 2 hours of integration (68x120sec exposures) vs. my original with 25 minutes of integration of 5x300sec integration.
