Description

I'm generally satisfied with this image but it took many iterations to get here. I really like the blue in the "tulip" but I was having difficulty with bringing that out vs. the structure in the lower nebula. I tried Generalized Hyperbolic Stretch and really like what it did to the nebula structure but it seemed to wipe out much of the blue. Regular HT preserved the the blue but I had to be very careful to preserve the nebula structure. In the end I think I succeeded with HT. There is probably something that I do not understand about GHS, so I will be experimenting more with that tool in the future. I adjusted the colors with curves and Bill Blanshan's color masks on a starless image. His PixelMath masks seem to be identical to those produced by the color mask script but it just seemed easier to use his icons. I also used his star reduction process. I wish I had shot RGB stars for this image and will probably try to do this for most narrow band images in the future.
