One of the first galaxies recognized to have a spiral shape was M58, and it is one of four barred spiral galaxies in Messier’s catalog.

M58 is also one of the brightest galaxies in the constellation Virgo, and is located roughly 62 million light-years from Earth, making M58 the most distant Messier object in his catalog.
