Description

This is a compilation of images captured in Stapleton, Nebraska, during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017. These were captured using a Canon 7D Mark II and Canon 500mm f/4L IS telephoto lens, mounted on aWimberley SK-100 Sidekick gimbal mount on a Gitzo carbon fiber tripod. All images were captured at f/8, ISO 100. The partial eclipse phases were captured with a Thousand Oaks Optical 181mm S-7125 solar filter, with three bracketed images 1 stop apart (1/125, 1/60, 1/30), while the images of the Diamond ring effect were captured without the filter, also with three bracketed images 1 stop apart (1/1000, 1/500, 1/250). The images of totality and the Sun's corona were captured without a solar filter with 7 bracketed images 2 stops apart, but only five were used to create the HDR image (1/500 to 0.5 sec). The Diamond ring effect happens approximately the last minute before totality and the first minute after totality, while Bailey's Beads happens during the last few seconds before totality and the first few seconds after totality, and are formed by the last vestiges of the Sun peaking through the mountains and hills on the Moon. During this time, it is safe for the camera to capture images without a solar filter, But it is NOT safe to look at the Sun without solar glasses; solar glasses should not be removed before totality has started so nothing is visible of the Sun.
