Description

After the clouds and snow for a month and a half, finally there was a clear night. The only target at that point was the moon, so I decided to give it a try.

This time the moon is shown in full color. Colors are enhanced in this photo and there is no artificial color added, it’s just that enhanced saturation is giving much more vivid images.

These enhanced colors are related to the lunar mineralogy, which is related to the chemical composition of the lunar rocks. Blue and orange shades indicate volcanic lava flows. The dark blues indicate that those areas are richer in titanium-bearing minerals. Pink colors indicate iron-poor, aluminum-rich feldspars (which is a group of rock-forming tectosilicate minerals) that make up the lunar highlands. Orange and purple indicate regions that are relatively poor in titanium and iron.
