Description

The Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31 is one the largest galaxies as seen from Earth besides the Triangulum Galaxy and Magellanic Clouds. Also visible in this image are M31's satellite dwarf galaxies M32 and M110.

This galaxy is easily spotted under dark skies with its halo visible to the naked eye once dark adapted. The 8" reflector I brought along really brings the galaxy up close. M31 was remarkable under a new moon + Bortle 2 zone, live views of the detail and dust lanes were better than a one minute exposure under my Bortle 8 backyard. Nothing else needs to be said regarding the FRA400's exposures under such pristine conditions.

There's something refreshing about getting out to a dark site and taking shorter integration times on a couple of bright objects while enjoying the night sky. Under a sky that dark, bright objects like M31 and M42 don't need the long integration times that narrowband and light pollution demand; the resulting images are "simply good enough".
