Description

M27 is a fascinating planetary nebula because it is so close to Earth (1,360 light years), so bright and so colorful.  Its Hydrogen and Oxygen gasses are illuminated by its abnormally hot white dwarf at the center of the nebula, burning at about 153,000°F.

This particular rendition is what resulted from a battle with the clouds.  I shot this target for much longer than I normally would, but I ended up throwing away nearly half the frames because we have had almost relentless cloud cover this year.  Out of desperation, I also shot narrow band further into the moon's later phases than I normally would.  This year I've only managed to capture a few targets start-to-finish without having to wait a month to finish (and that's with 4 telescopes running).

Discovered by French astronomer Charles Messier on July 12, 1764.
