Description

Caldwell 14 - The Perseus Double Clusters, NGC 869 and NGC 884.

I've had a few attempts at shooting these clusters since starting my astrophotography journey. They are 2 of the few star clusters that I am able to faintly see with the naked eye from my moderately light-polluted back yard.

This is also the first image I am sharing that was captured with my 8" ONTC from Teleskop Service. It has been an absolute joy to use since I acquired it earlier this year.

Capturing the data was not particularly challenging, however when it came to processing the data I noticed that I had some horrible gradients and artifacts. I've diagnosed these issues as reflections due to my coma corrector protruding too close to the tube of my OTA. I've made some adjustments to my imaging train since noticing these issues and it seems to have done the trick.

For the processing I tried keeping my workflow simple. I used the new BlurX AI 4 set to 'correct only' on the individual masters, channel combined them and then also ran the combined master through GraXpert which is a program I am still experimenting with, but has so far been very good at background extraction. SPCC for color calibration, I applied some light noise reduction and a Masked Stretch, and then adjusted the curves.
