Here is my take on one of the more challenging targets to photograph, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31). It's our closest galactic neighbor at a mere distance of about 2.5 million light years from Earth. It is classified as a barred or lenticular spiral but if your patient, you'll witness a massive collision between our home Milky Way and Andromeda, which will result in a massive elliptical galaxy in about 4.5 billion years. M31 was thought to be 20 to 50 percent more massive than our home galaxy. However, recent studies are showing it to be along the same order of magnitude as ours, even though it contains roughly twice the amount of stars estimated at 1 trillion. M31 measures about 220,000 light years in diameter; the largest galaxy in our local group which includes M33, the Triangulum Galaxy. All information above was researched from Wikipedia.

The challenging aspect of this target comes from the huge variant of brightness across the galaxy. Being able to bring out detail in the dust lanes and outer arms while not letting the core wash out the inner detail was accomplished through the HDR tool in PI.

Autoguiding was accomplished with a Orion 80mm short tube and a ZWO ASI 183MC planetary camera

Hope you enjoy this. After a dismal summer of poor seeing due to smoke and haze from all the fires in the west, this was the first chance for me to get back out.there. Any recommendation or constructive critics' are always welcome.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
