Description

Here is the first image I was able to produce with my 8" ONTC. My first time using a newtonian telescope. I began the project in early May but due to the short late spring/summer nights I was not able to gather as much data as I originally wanted, but I am nevertheless happy with how the image turned out. Shooting from a light-polluted location is difficult especially in broadband.

I have tried to process this image and mitigate some of the reflection issues I encountered. On individual sub-frames they were not noticeable, but on the integrated masters there was a definite reflection especially on the green filter. I've been able to diagnose this issue as an internal reflection from my coma corrector due to the end being too close to the main tube of the scope. Luckily due to the design of the ONTC I was able to adjust the position of the primary mirror and move my corrector out so that since then I've been able to avoid these reflections.

IC 5146 is a fascinating object around 4000 light years away glowing red from the intense ionized Hydrogen gas. I particularly like this object due to the emission, reflection and dark nebulae all present.
