Description

vdB19 (a.k.a. IC348) sits almost exactly halfway between two of the most imaged objects in the sky: the Pleiades and NGC1499. I think this is why it gets so little attention from astrophotographers. Like its other neighbor, NGC1333, this area has a complex mix of molecular clouds, emission nebulae, and brightly lit reflection nebulae. Also like NGC1333, it’s a challenging object to image due to the faintness and limited contrast available here. The bright star here is Atik (Omicron Persei). It lights up the reflection nebula vdB19/IC348. The dark nebula at center-left is Barnard 5. The prominent dark nebula just right of center is Barnard 3. Another Barnard, 2, is at the top-right corner.
