Description

The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), captured here with a Celestron EdgeHD 11 at F/7 with a QHY 600M in a combination of SHO (Hubble Palette) and HOO with about 4.5 hours of data. While that amount of data might seem rather limited, I wanted to get something reasonable within the weather and fire season constraints here in the pacific northwest. And so careful processing was required to bring out the intricate details within the structure of the nebula without blowing out the rest of the colors and details.

Discovered in 1792 by William Herschel, it is speculated to be formed by the collision of fast moving stellar winds from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136 with the slower moving stellar winds ejected by the star as it expanded to become a red giant, creating simultaneously inward and outward moving shockwaves, several hundreds of thousands of years ago.
