Description

The Lagoon Nebula, also known as Messier 8 (M8), is a vast interstellar cloud located roughly 4,100 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius. It stretches roughly 55 light-years across, making it a truly enormous celestial structure and a vast stellar nursery where clouds of dust and gas collapse to form new stars. Its name comes from the dark lanes of dust that weave throughout the nebula, giving it a resemblance to a lagoon.
