Description

NGC7129 is a reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus, located at a distance of 3,300 light years. The nebula is a stellar nursery, as many young stars lie within, although most of the stars within NGC7129 are invisible at optical wavelengths and can only be detected at infrared wavelengths. The dominant blue color of the nebula is due to the reflection of starlight off the dust clouds. Most of the blue color has been attributed to the illumination provided by two young B-type stars, BD +65°1637 and BD +65°1638, both of which are less than a million years old.

There are also small red crescents (known as Herbig-Haro objects) and longer red filaments within NGC7129; the former results from hydrogen gas being ionized by streaming jets emanating from the young stars, and the latter results from photoluminescence, a process in which dust grains absorb ultraviolet light and subsequently radiate visible red light.

Image Information:

Data acquired on August 29, 30, 31, September 1, October 25, 26, 27 in 2019. All frames were binned 2x2.

Lum: 26x30” + 12x1’ + 27x5’ + 18x10’ + 3x20’ = 400’ total (6.67 hours)

Red: 21x30” + 13x5’ + 8x10’ = 155.5’ total

Green: 12x30” + 9x5’ + 3x10’ = 81’ total

Blue: 33x30” + 33x5’ + 10x10’ = 281.5’ total

918’ total integration = 15.3 hours

Description: After uploading the first version of this image, I discovered that it did not look quite as I intended on devices other than the computer I used to develop the image. I determined that the display calibration of my computer needed to be revised. After doing this, I edited the image and this is the result. I hope this is an improvement over the original. Comments are welcome.
