Description

IC 5146,the Cocoon Nebula, is a reflection emission nebula in the constellation Cygnus. It is located near the naked-eye star Pi Cygni, the open cluster NGC 7209 in Lacerta, and the bright open cluster M39. It is about 4,000 ly away, and the central star that lights it formed about 100,000 years ago. The nebula is about 12 arcmins across, which is equivalent to a span of 15 light years. When viewing IC 5146, dark nebula Barnard 168 (B168) is an inseparable part of the experience, forming a dark lane that surrounds the cluster and projects westward forming the appearance of a trail behind the Cocoon. The image was captured with the Meade 12"LX200 and Atik 383L+mono camera. Reduction was at F/8.0. Still struggling with vignetting, I had moved the Meade f/6.3 reducer/corrector to behind the OAG5 and in front of the EFW2. While not eliminating the vignetting, it did reduce it, due to the increased focal ratio. Although some can still be seen in each corner of the image.

Filters used -- Astronomik's L, R, G, B.

All L subs were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each.

All R, G and B subs were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each.

L: 27 subs (4.5 hr) on September 3rd and 4th.

R: 6 subs (1.00 hr) on September 5th.

G: 5 subs (0.83 hr) on September 5th.

B: 6 subs (1.00 hr) on September 5th.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) best practices up to now. Luminance was processed to bring out detail. R, G and B were combined and blurred. Then Luminance (L) was added to the combined RGB.

North is up. This is a slight crop. Images continue to be plagued by vignetting. I've conducted several tests with different arrangements of the optical components. Notwithstanding Atik's position that vignetting should be minimal, I have proven to myself that it occurs possibly up to f/9.0.
