Description

I imaged this using my ZenithStar61 travel scope because M57 is one of the targets for the big scope at the Gunnison Valley Observatory. The GVO scope is a 30" reflector with a focal length of 6.8m. M57 looks pretty impressive in this telescope!! (Described by the GVO staff as a fuzzy cheerio ).

Now to my image. I had to laugh - M57 is so small (Size is 1.27'). How on earth did anyone ever find M57 in the first place??

M57 was discovered by Charles Messier in 1779, had its spectra first analyzed in 1864 by William Huggins, and was first photographed in 1886 by Hungarian astronomer Eugene von Gothard. His image can be seen online at www.catchersofthelight.com.
