Description

M27 - Dumbbell Nebula

27/05/2019

My first attempt on this target, with just 1.5 hours of data. I was positively surprised on this first result on such a 'small' target and I'm quite happy on the star field I was able to capture (over 2000 stars detected in this image).

The Dumbbell Nebula is a planetary nebula, an expanding shell of ionized gas, material that was ejected from the central star during its giant phase. The outer layers of the star were ejected to create this shell and now the dense core of the star remains: a White Dwarf.

This White Dwarf is also visible in my image, in the center of the nebula. The blue colour is emitted by oxygen atoms and the red colour by hydrogen atoms.

Distance: ~1.200 lightyears away

Diameter: ~3 lightyears across

Frames: 33 x 180" at 800 ISO

Telescope: Sky-Watcher ED100 Black Diamond

Camera: Canon 550D

Mount: Celestron AVX

Edit:

Added 3 hours of more data on 05/06/19:

Total acquisition time = 4.5+ hours, 93 x 180" at 800 ISO.
