Description

Sh2-261 AKA Lower’s Nebula was discovered in 1939.
The Lowers (father and son) were amateur astronomers and found this nebula on one of their photgraphic plates taken in 1939.

SH2-261 is a relatively faint region emitting doubly ionized hydrogen, with an apparent diameter of about 50 arcminutes.
There is no accurate measurement as to the distance of this nebula, although best estimation is about 3.300 light years.
It is found in the constellation Orion near the border of Gemini.

Original Image:
I had a hard time picking up any blue in the center of this nebula, when I did it looked fake.
Because of this I used a HSO palette and left the colors the way they were.
I tried using SpectaPhotometricColorCalibration but the colors came out wrong.

Revision C:
I did something I've never done before - let me know what you think !!
1. Created a red image from the Ha and Sii
2. Created a blue image from the Oiii
3. Cleaned up both images and minimized the background
4. Extracted the luminance mask from  the blue image
5. Placed the luminance mask on the red image and used it to de-saturate the blue area of the red image.
6. Combined the red and blue images with PixelMath
7. Put the R,G,B stars onto the final image.
I toned down the blue to give it a more natural feel. I may try to improve the detail in the center and upload a final ? version.

Revision D:
I didn't like the way the blue came out in Revision 'C', so I found a way to get the blue to come out without destroying the detail in the center
When I combined Ha, Oiii, and Sii I used a synthetic green
PixelMath
    R/K: Ha * 0.7  + Sii * 0.3
    G: (Ha + Oiii) * 0.2
    B: Oiii * 1.4
This really helped bring out the Blue and Red.
The rest of my processing -
DynamicBackgroundExtraction
HistogramTransformation -  stretch but not much
CurvesTransformation - s-curve
A light coating of NoiseExterminator
LRGBCombination using Ha as the Lum
UnsharpMask -StdDev all the way up to get more contrast
LocalHistogramEqualization
ColorSaturation - bring the blue up a bit
AutomaticBackgroundExtraction - strange place to use it but it darkened the background nicely
PixelMath - combine the R,G,B stars with the main image
