Description

NGC1097 aka Caldwell 67, is a barred spiral in the constellation of Fornax. With an apparent magnitude of about 10, it is visible when using medium to large aperture telescopes such as an 8" Newtonian. The somewhat asymmetrical shape of NGC1097 is due to its companion elliptical dwarf, NGC1097A. On Sep. 8th, 2023, a type II supernova exploded in NGC1097, the peak visual magnitude was 14, which meant an absolute magnitude of around -17.
