Rho Ophiuchi (ρ Oph) is a **multiple star system** in the constellation Ophiuchus, about 360 light years away from Earth¹². It was discovered by **William Herschel** in 1784¹.
Rho Ophiuchi consists of at least five stars, designated Rho Ophiuchi A, B, C, D and E¹². Rho Ophiuchi AB is the brightest pair, composed of two blue subgiants or main-sequence stars of spectral type B2/3V and B2V, respectively¹³. They orbit each other with a period of about 2,400 years and a separation of at least 344 astronomical units (au)³. Rho Ophiuchi C is a single star of spectral type B5V, located about 0.8° away from Rho Ophiuchi AB¹². Rho Ophiuchi D and E form another binary pair, composed of two stars of spectral type F8V and G6V, respectively¹³. They orbit each other with a period of about 676 years and a separation of about 100 au³.
Rho Ophiuchi is the namesake of the **Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex**, a large region of interstellar gas and dust that contains several nebulae, especially dark nebulae. The Rho Ophiuchi system is embedded in one of these nebulae, known as IC 4604 or the Blue Horsehead Nebula. It is one of the closest star-forming regions to the Solar System and one of the easiest to observe.
