Description

NGC 2170 is a complex combination of emission, reflection, and dark nebulae that lies at the western
edge of the large, star-forming molecular cloud known as Monoceros R42. It lies some 2,700ly away,
and is about 15ly across from our perspective. It is believed to have formed around 6 to 10 million years
ago. There are strong indications of ongoing star formation, and the presence of massive stars that are
largely hidden to us behind the thick stellar dust that populates the nebula. Stellar winds from these stars
are believed to be responsible for the fractured appearance of the nebula.

I have not found a definitive reason for the common name given to this nebula. I suspect that the dark
nebulae in the nebulosity on the southern side of the bright area remind one of the fine patterning in, say,
a butterfly’s wing, and the upper, bright nebulae are reminiscent of depictions of fairies and/or pixies. The
combination of these features then represent an other-worldly creature - just my guess!

This object would benefit from longer exposure under darker conditions to bring out the dim
nebulosity in the southern areas of the nebula.
