Description

Continuing my pursuit of the vdB catalog of reflection nebula targets, this is vdB 17, otherwise known as NGC 1333, the Embryo Nebula, or the Phantom Tiara.

vdB 17 is a reflection nebula located in the northern constellation Perseus.  It is a part of the broader Perseus Cloud, a vast region of interstellar gas and dust as seen in the background of this image.

This photo shows three well differentiated regions:

1) the reflection nebula, NGC 1333 itself, the bright blueish area toward the top of the structures
2) the reddish region in the center is an area of very high star birth and contains multiple Herbig Haro objects
3) the surrounding brownish dust associated with Integrated Flux Nebula barely illuminated by the stars in the region.

I spent just over 20 hours imaging this target in December 2023 with an RC8 telescope at 1625mm FL and the ASI 071MC Pro camera riding an EQ6r Pro mount.
