Description

Messier 78 is the brightest reflection nebula in the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. It lies just northeast of Alnitak, the leftmost star in Orion’s Belt, not far from the Horsehead and Flame Nebulae.

One astronomer quipped, “One thing is certain – Messier 78 is a pretty incredible star forming region with many mysteries.” One can see the intense flame of nascent stars glowering behind heavy nebulosity in the right lower third of the picture.

I have imaged this nebula once  in the past but this time I managed six hours of integration time over two nights, revealing a lot more detail.
