Description

M101, or the Pinwheel galaxy, is a face on spiral galaxy similar to our Milky Way, but about 70 percent bigger. It is located about 21 million light years from Earth. M101 has prominent and well-defined spiral arms, and is located in the constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear.  It was discovered by Pierre Méchain in 1781 and was communicated that year to Charles Messier, who verified its position for inclusion in the Messier Catalogue as one of its final entries.
