Description

The Cocoon nebula is a nebula in Cygnus, with both emission and reflection nebula components.    It also is engulfed in a dark nebula cataloged as Barnard 168 which is inseparable from the Cocoon.      The massive central star provides much of the energy for the emission and reflection components of IC5146.    Like many emission nebula, the Cocoon is a stellar nursery for new star formation.
I imaged the Cocoon from my home in Vermont, using a TEC140ED telescope with AP flattener mounted on an Astro-Physics 1100GTO mount with encoders.     I used an ASI 6200MM pro camera with Chroma LRGB filters and Chroma 3nm Ha filter.    Overall I captured 120 2 minute lum frames, 16 15 minute Ha frames and 75 minutes of R G and B each for an overall integration of 12 hours.

The image can be portrayed without Ha and almost looks the same except for the streamer of Ha that shoots from below and through and above the Cocoon.   There is much Ha in the field but much of it is eclipsed by the dense star field or darker nebulosity.
