Description

The Jellyfish Nebula - Supernova Remnant IC443

One of my favorites and is an Emission Nebulae located in the Constellation Gemini at a distance of 5,000 light years.
Also known as Sharpless 248 - Sh2-248.

Why the designation of Sharpless 248. Well being a relative newbie in the field I had to look it up and came across this description in Wikipedia.
( I will read Burnham's 3 volume celestial handbook in another lifetime. lol ).

The Sharpless catalog is a list of 313 H II regions (emission nebulae) intended to be a comprehensive collection of objects north of declination −27°.
The final version was published by US astronomer Stewart Sharpless in 1959 with 312 objects. see the link in Wikipedia for a more complete description...
Sharpless_catalog.
The catalog has a number of interesting objects for additional imaging if you are a fan of the emission nebulae.
In addition, there is a mention of the information below which I found very interesting.

The 312 items in Sharpless sometimes overlap with the 110 Messier objects (M), 7,840 objects in the New General Catalogue (NGC),
the Caldwell catalogue (itself a "best of" from other catalogues, with 109 items), and the RCW catalog.
Contemporary catalogs were Gum and RCW, but they mainly covered the southern hemisphere. Wikipedia: Gum Catalog

The Gum catalog contains some beautiful lesser known objects as well as the more familiar Eagle nebula and Thor's Helmet.
I could not help marveling at the recent Image of the Day - IOD chosen on 1/19/2024 by sq and Johnnywang Gum15.

I will also direct you to Gary Imm's site for a list of catalogs that should keep you occupied for a few years.
I also can direct you to this link for a downloadable detailed catalog. The Sharpless Observing Atlas

Processing was accomplished utilizing most of the steps outlined in my previous description=infobox-dataof the Flaming Star Nebula:

I then opened it in Photoshop and added some additional color and contrast adjustments.
In PS I utilized luminosity masking to select and burn in areas of the nebula needing a spot of polish.
For those interested in Luminosity masking I would refer you to Tony Kuypers excellent website where you can learn more on this fantastic tool.
Here you can learn more how to create and utilize exquisite selections to make targeted adjustments to isolated areas of your image.
I have used it for many years now in my landscape images: www.vicbeer.com
