Description

NGC1499 (Per) aka "California Nebula"

It is quite surprising that the well-known "California Nebula" in the constellation "Perseus" has an extent of more than five full moon diameters. Added to this is its great distance of over 1300 light years.

While NGC1499 is difficult to observe visually because the contrast to the sky background is relatively weak, so that at very low magnification with a UHC filter you can just barely see the northern rim, its full magnificence is revealed through the means of photography: This HII region glows bright red and stands out clearly from the entire surrounding area.

I love the heaven -
and heaven loves me.
