Description

The bright star is Gamma Cassiopeiae (γ Cas), this is the bright star at the middle of the easily recognised 'W' of the Cassiopeia constellation.  It is a variable binary star, with a brightness that varies over time - in 1940 it had a brightness of +3.4mag, compared to today's +2.15mag.  The variation is caused by changes in a decretion disc formed around the star caused by its rapid spin.

The Cas Nebulae, IC63 and IC59, are faint emission and reflection nebulae approximately 610 light years away from us and about 3 light years from γ Cas, which illuminates and ionizes them. The brighter IC63, also known as 'The ghost of Cassiopeia', is largely hydrogen, while IC59 has a lot more dust in the mix, reflecting starlight.

The wider field version shows several dense clouds of dark dust, and star clusters NGC366, NGC381 and NGC358.
