Description

The Pelican nebula (IC 5070) imaged here is a part of the greater North American Nebula. The gaseous features of this emission nebula bear a resemblance to a pelican, giving rise to its name. The Pelican has an active mix of star formation and evolving gas clouds. The light from young active stars is slowly transforming cold gas to hot and causing an ionization front gradually to advance outward. Particularly dense filaments of cold gas are seen to still remain.

I have previously imaged the Cygnus wall, and the same themes come through. Very strong Ha and Oiii signals accentuated by the Sii signal. It looks like a painting even in the raw pictures. I continue to enjoy imaging nebulae this season with close up / narrowfield imaging and it has been a blast.
