Description

The Pelican Nebula is an HII region in the constellation Cygnus. Located right beside the ever popular North America Nebula (NGC7000), it is an active star forming region and has a very prominent Herbig-Haro object at the back of the pelican head. This appears clearly as a giant pillar going from right to left and you can clearly see the shock wave at the front of the pillar/object if you zoom in a bit. This is caused by a young, unseen proto star developing in the area and a narrow jet of high speed gas that is being ejected at hundreds of kilometers per second.
