Description

M106 is an intermediate spiral galaxy in the constellation of Canes Venatici.  It lies at a distance of between 22m and 25m light years from Earth.  In addition to the two spiral arms clearly seen in visible light, there are two further arms which can be seen in X-ray and Radio wave images.  These additional arms are visible in this image in the Ha data - one appears to be bent upwards at the top of the galaxy image  - the other is less easy to make out and appears to dip downwards at 180 degrees in the opposite direction.  M106 also played an important role in calibrating the cosmic distance ladder.
