Description

Like for many, M 51 is one of my favorite targets and though I imaged it last year, I thought a new mount and camera since warranted a v.2.0. Its popularity isn’t a surprise; relatively close, bright, and perfectly face-on grand design spiral *plus* a tag-along companion, but for me it’s the nebulosity around the galaxies and how it’s so dynamically shaped that’s most interesting. Along the top of M 51’s upper arm the nebulosity appears compressed and particularly dense while on the galaxy’s other side it appears to be streaming away…..Stellar winds? The galaxy’s own motion? And obviously some very complex dynamics going on around the companion galaxy, NGC 5195. Thought I saw some discussion on the shaping of M 51’s nebulosity in a paper, but can’t find it now and am interested to learn more if anyone has some beta….
