Description

NGC 4565 (AKA the Needle Galaxy or Caldwell 38), is an edge-on spiral galaxy 30 to 50 Million light-years distant in the constellation Coma Berenices. It lies close to the North Galactic Pole and has a visual magnitude of approximately 10 and is known as the Needle Galaxy for its narrow profile. First recorded in 1785 by William Herschel, it is a prominent example of an edge-on spiral galaxy. NGC 4565 is a giant spiral galaxy more luminous than the Andromeda Galaxy.

Imaged from home on 17 and 19 April 2024 using a SkyWatcher Esprit 120 ED super APO Triplet, ASI2600MC Duo camera, Optolong L-Pro filter (to counter an 9 day illuminated Moon) and a ZWO AM5 Harmonic drive. Antoniadi Scale was III. Image processed using PixInsight and Lightroom.
