Description

The Sombrero Galaxy, also known as M104, is a spiral galaxy located approximately 28 million light-years away from Earth, in the constellation of Virgo. Its name derives from its peculiar appearance due to a dense central bulge and an extensive dust disk resembling a Mexican hat. With a diameter of about 50,000 light-years, it is one of the most striking galaxies in the visible universe. In addition to its remarkable appearance, the Sombrero Galaxy is known to host a supermassive black hole at its center, with a mass equivalent to more than a billion times that of our Sun.
