Description

I have been going through the Sharpless Catalogue and this came up. Was not very familiar with this emission nebula but it is beautiful and bright and quite large. Surprised it does not have a name. Can we call it the Oyster nebula?

It lies about 5500 light years away within the nebulae-rich Cygnus constellation. The central star seen in this image , aptly called BD+45 3216 is responsible for illuminating this nebula. I am surprised it is not imaged more often. To me it looks just as majestic as the "pacman" or the Tulip. It is also a great target for SHO imaging for those with a smaller FOV/ longer focal lengths. It is definitely worth a visit this season.
