Description

Splinter Galaxy - NGC 5907
Svbony 550 122mm with field flattener - FL683
Canon T5i - not modified for astrophotography; CLS filter
AVX, ZWO 30F4, ASI 120mini
194x2min subs @ ISO 800, the best of 210X2min subs, for 6.45hrs imaging plus calibration frames

ATP, PHD2, SIRIL 1.2.1, Photoshop

First test after I made a pier for my AVX mount, from $20 worth of PVC plumbing, to minimize the risk of the new telescope from striking the mount and damaging it. This target was imaged last night under a 99% full moon. The test was successful, I left the mount to follow the target across the meridian and it was a perfect result, everything went flawlessly....and, of course, I set an alarm to catch all the action at 2:30am.

The image result is better than expected, given the full moon flooding the sky with light.

From Wiki, NGC 5907 is also known as the Splinter Galaxy (and sometimes the Knife Edge Galaxy).  It has a morphology classification of a type SA(s)c seen almost perfectly edge-on.  It lies at a distance of 53 million light years and has an apparent magnitude of 11.1.  At 12.7' x 1.4' it is a moderately large target suitable for most amateur telescopes.  NGC 5907 is a part of a larger group of galaxies called the NGC 5866 group and it has few detectable blue giant stars.
