Description

M106. Taken at the OKCAC’s Cheddar Ranch Observatory the night of 11-12 Feb 2023. Conditions were very good after sunset, clear calm and cold, until about 2200. The winds really picked up then to about 15mph or more. I wanted to capture a at least a 30 min session, preferably an hour, but at 27 minutes it was only adding a frame about every 5 minutes or so, so ended the session. I got 162 auto stacked 10 sec images. No post processing.

As the image was progressing, I saw what looked like a comet in the frame, to the upper right of M106, Small but with a very distinct tail! Upon analysis, I realized it was another galaxy, NGC 4248, with a star or something right at the end, making it look like a comet. I had taken a 2 minute auto-stacked image of M106 with my eVscope2 and that galaxy did not stand out as much as in this one. I was quite excited when I thought it was a comet. M106 didn’t turn out as well as I wanted, due to the short session, so I’ll try again on another night to get a better image of it.
