Description

Jupiter pictured with its innermost moon Io. While this was my first-ever "mostly" solo attempt at planetary imaging, I already had 8 years of experience as my son's assistant during his planetary imaging sessions. Ever since he was four and received his first telescope twenty years ago, my son (Ethan) has had a passion for all things space related. Pursuing that passion eventually led us both into astrophotography in 2013. Since that time, Ethan has been a prolific and accomplished planetary imager. He was featured in international media for capturing an impact on Jupiter (Aug 2019) as well as a rare triple moon shadow transit of Jupiter (Jan 2015). After assisting an expert for years, I finally decided to give it a go myself. On the morning I captured the data, seeing was a little below average and the Great Red Spot wasn't in view. So the final image is not very good, but considering I only had a little help with my son and had a good time acquiring the data, I will call it a win. While I hope to be more involved with planetary imaging in the future, right now I'll stay focused on deep sky imaging.
