Description

Never in my life did I imagine we'd see the northern lights from Alabama...what an absolutely incredible experience! I expected that, at the most, we would see a slight green glow on the horizon, but when the sky began to brighten more and more every few minutes, my expectations were quickly blown out of the water. Over the course of an hour, we saw many formations of bright green and pink pillars and clouds dancing around the northern skies and right overhead. I had my camera shooting away in several timelapse sequences and these are some of my favorite frames from the night. I hope y'all enjoy and were able to get out and see them yourselves!

Aurora Borealis is caused by the ionization of nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, and helium gasses in our atmosphere when a strong solar wind of charged particles hits earth's ionosphere or thermosphere. The activity of a huge sunspot on the sun was the cause of the extreme G5 geomagnetic storm that triggered the Aurora. There's lots of science going on here, and it sure makes for a beautiful show!
