Description

The Crescent Nebula, NGC 6888 (a.k.a. Caldwell 27, Sharpless 105) is an emission nebula and was formed by the fast stellar wind from the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136. This wind collided with, and energized a slower wind previously ejected when the star became a red giant 400,000 years ago. Results of this are a shell and two shock waves, with one moving outward and the other moving inward. The inboard shock wave heats the stellar wind to X-ray-emitting temperatures. The nebula is located about 5000 light years away in the constellation Cygnus. (Source Wikipedia).

The image was captured with the Meade 12"LX200, using the Atik 383L+ mono at F7.16 (i.e. 2182mm FL). Astronomik's Ha and OIII narrow band filters were used for the luminance (Ha for image A, and OIII for image B). All subs were taken at 1x1 bin, -10C, and 10 minutes each.

IMAGE A:

Ha : 10 subs (1.67 hr) on Aug 25th.

Red: 13 subs (2.167 hr) on Sep 20th and 22nd.

Green: 13 subs (2.167 hr) on Sep 20th and 21st.

Blue: 13 subs (2.167hr) on Sep 20th and 21st.

Processing was done with PixInsight, following (for the most part) kayronjm's tutorial of Feb. 24th

North is up. This is a medium crop due to my inability to find the original guide star from Ha to the RGB subs. North is up.

IMAGE B:

OIII : 10 subs (1.67 hr) on Aug 25th.

SII yielded the weakest signal of the three Narrow bands, so it was not included here.
