Description

NGC 6979 is a wonderfully complex part of the Veil supernova remnant. Discovered photographically in 1904 by Williamina Fleming of the Harvard Observatory, but, per tradition at the time, Edward Charles Pickering, the observatory director, assigned his own name to this object.

That was then, this is now. Time to give Fleming due credit.

Not a new image. Reprocessed from 2010 data.
