Description

IC 443 (Jellyfish Nebula Sh2-248) is a galactic supernova remnant (SNR) located in the constellation Gemini, approximately 5,000 light years away from Earth. The nebula has an apparent angular diameter of 50 arcminutes, which translates to a real size of about 70 light-years at its distance. Its structure resembles that of a shell, with two halves of different radii and centers. An additional nebulous shell, initially attributed to IC 443, is now recognized as an older supernova remnant (G189.6+3.3), estimated to be around 100,000 years old. The exact age of IC 443 remains uncertain and is estimated to be between 3,000 and 30,000 years.IC 443 is situated toward the anticenter of our galaxy (l=189.1°) and close to the galactic plane (b=+3.0°). Several other objects coexist in this region of the sky, including the HII region S249, young stars belonging to the Gem OB1 association, and older supernova remnants like G189.6+3.3. The nebula evolves in a rich and complex environment, significantly influencing its morphology. Observations across different wavelengths reveal varying shapes and cloud geometries.Chandra X-ray observations have identified a pulsar near the southern edge of IC 443. This peculiar object likely resulted from the same explosion that created the Jellyfish Nebula.
