Description

M96 was discovered in 1781 by Pierre Mechain.  M96 is categorized  as a double barred spiral galaxy located 31MLy's away in the constellation Leo.  It is about the same size and mass as the Milky Way.  It is considered an asymmetrical galaxy with its core not located in the galaxy's center probably due to interactions with its close galactic neighbors which include M95 and M105.
