NGC 1186

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 1174, is a barred spiral galaxy located 110 million light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of +42 degrees. It is a magnitude 11.4 galaxy which spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view. This corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years. From our view perspective, the disk is inclined at about 70 degrees.

This galaxy has several interesting features. A dark dust band spirals into the top side of the core, which looks like a barlens to me but the inclination of this galaxy makes that tough to confirm. VV rows are seen in the fragmented arms, which form a broken pseudoring around the inner region. The arms appear disturbed but I don’t see any obvious companions or intruders.

Several distant galaxies are seen in the background, including 2 nice edge-on galaxies.
